Dear Lucile:

I really am a bit worried, but this is the "year of the Biography", and my faith in the Pattern is immense.

I've just met my new classes — 190 or more in Epic America (all very attentive) and eight in Critical Essay. The eight are evidently the sort I want.

Here is a confession: I just do not know what you'ns there sent me as a birthday present! Isn't this ridiculous? Evidently things got mixed up. I do thank you just the same.

And did you write me since the Birthday Party,

(over)
since I sent the New York letters to you? I've feared that mail may have been lost here. Two expected letters have not turned up.

Anyway, the same affection always.
