Here is good news! The Nebraska Legislature has today voted unanimously to place a bronze bust of me in the Hall of Fame, State Capitol Building, Lincoln. This is quite a triumph, as the Bill establishing the Hall of Fame (passed a few weeks ago) stipulates that no living person shall be eligible to the honor. There was a
state-wide movement urging
an exception
that an exception be made in my case — the newspapers, the University, the colleges, the Governor etc all endorsing the movement.
Here's another nice thing that should be of use to you in the biography. A certain Lee Vernon of Chicago, now 73 years old and retired from 40 years of teaching in Chicago schools, writes me that he (or is it she?) remembers me as a young man walking
walking past the country school in Wayne County where he, a kid, was attending. He saw me once after that, but has heard heard of me often, & now he feels the urge to write!
How could a kid of 8-10 years be so impressed? Evidently I just walked by the school while the kids were playing, and stopped to say something pleasant to the youngsters.
I wonder where I was going. I walked so much & so far those days. To think the boy (or is Lee a girl?) did not forget!!
Well, I'll be seeing you'ns before too long. I dread it terribly, because I don't like you people at all. Also I don't like Perky either.
Otherwise, the same old affection.
