Dear Lucile:

I feel cut off from you, and it is not a pleasant feeling, I can tell you! I have hoped that I could be with you at Xmas time in London. (What a fine thing to do!) But I have felt compelled to postpone the India trip. The doctor and the family discouraged the venture because of the "traumatic pleurisy" which shortens my breath. I can speak well enough to a crowd, but a little physical exertion is too much for my lungs. I'm doing one course at the university, in addition to the telecourse, The Twilight of the Sioux.

I've finished the notes on the MS you gave me, and tomorrow I'll dictate some things to a tape recorder. One of my students bought a $170 machine to record my course, and he will be with me at home here tomorrow to make a record for you.

Be sure that you are very dear to this poor old man. Affectionate thoughts to Bower and Stewart.

Love to you
-
