Dr. Slade Kendrick 225 Willard Way Ithaca, New York
Dear Slade:

Another bully letter from you!

Since I wrote you last some nice things have been happening. First of all, the University of Missouri will give me the Thomas Jefferson Award on April 12. This is a much coveted honor, as I have no doubt you know. Then on April 20 there will be a ceremony at the University Library dedicating the Neihardt Collection and the bronze bust which has been mounted on a marble pedestal.

I am leaving Wednesday for Columbia. On the 5th of April I will hold forth at a banquet given in memory of Rose O'Neill whose home was near Branson and whom we knew well. You will remember her as the maker kewpies . She was also a very fine lyric poet, which is something the public doesn't know.

I am glad you have been reading Pliny. His description of the destruction of Pompeii is of course a classic.

I am looking forward to seeing my family and I consider my dogs a part of the family. One expects a family to hug him but the way these doggies go on when I come home is enough to make one want to weep.

I am moving under full sail with my old man's rememberings. I really wish I did not have to go away just now. I'd like to continue with the writing. Slade, I wouldn't be surprised if it would be a pretty fair book. Anyway, it's fun to write.

With affectionate thoughts for you and your lady,

John
