Letter from John G. Neihardt to Slade Kendrick, August 17, 1966

Route 7, Columbia, Mo.Aug. 17, 66 Dear Slade:
I have just come back from Bancroft and a trip out into the Sand Hills of western Nebraska, where I visited with the Black family. They have a ranch of 42,000 acres!! It was a joy to drive around through those hills! It's all virgin prairie —
largely buffalo grass. That feeling of eternity is something to experience!!
The Bancroft Black Elk Pageant (in my h

honor) was an amazing success! There were about 1400 in the audience, and the crowd was enveloped in an atmosphere of

affection. It was a pure joy.
I'm writing without my glasses, which are being mended.
I'll write again soon.
With affection — John N. P. S.The horse-dance — 16 costumed riders and four fours of horses — was most impressive.
